New contract for the refurbishment of apron areas at Düsseldorf Airport
/ Transport route engineering / News / Press Release
Düsseldorf Airport has commissioned PORR's Münster/Dortmund branch to carry out renovation work on the apron. Since March 2024, the first construction phase (BA1) will see 7,300 m² of concrete surfaces in parking positions B05 - B08 completely renewed and the asphalting of a 550 m² car park. From the middle of the year, 23,750 m² of taxiway P4 will be renewed in the second construction phase (BA2). In both construction phases, the old drainage systems and cable routes will be replaced by new systems. The end of the construction work is planned for April 2025.

Precise planning and close coordination with the airport management, flight operations and third-party trades are crucial for construction work in the security area of an airport in order to ensure adherence to schedules and quality.

Extremely high demands on adherence to deadlines, project planning and quality assurance
"We know from past projects that construction work in the security area of an airport requires meticulous planning of shifts and logistics as well as perfect quality assurance. We are therefore also utilising the expertise of our in-house building materials laboratory and our subsidiary CMG Baulogistik for the current contract," explains branch manager Jan Berghaus.
As taxiing and parking areas in the area of the construction site are temporarily closed, the work must be closely coordinated with the airport management, flight operations and third-party trades. "Scheduling reliability and diligence are essential to ensure that flight operations can be maintained," continues Berghaus.
Parts of the demolition material will be reused
The renovation work will be carried out in the north-western apron area of Pier B, i.e. in the immediate vicinity of the terminal, during permanent flight operations and aircraft taxiing traffic. Most of the work will be carried out during the day. The installation of the concrete layer, the hydraulically bound base layers (HGT) and the new asphalt surfaces along the service road will mainly take place at night. On the one hand, operations on the terminal road must be guaranteed, and on the other hand, some of the construction sites are located in the area of authorised taxiways.
In the first stage, the existing surface consisting of concrete, asphalt, HGT and unbound layers will be completely demolished in BA1. Some of the concrete and HGT material will be crushed on site at the construction site facility, temporarily stored and used as soil replacement material for BA2. Some of the demolished concrete will also be used for installation in the HGT layer during the demolition of the areas in BA2. The subsequent basic refurbishment is mainly carried out in apron quality. The 1.20 metre thick standard concrete superstructure in Düsseldorf consists of 40 cm of concrete pavement, 20 cm each of hydraulically bound base course 0/32 and gravel base course 0/45 as well as 40 cm of frost protection layer 0/45. If necessary, non-load-bearing soil will be replaced.
