PORR Spezialtiefbau is designing the new Fehmarn Sound crossing
/ Special civil engineering
PORR Spezialtiefbau is part of the ARGE Züblin–PORR–Implenia consortium and plays a central role in the construction of the new Fehmarn Sound crossing. The project, commissioned by DB InfraGO and DEGES, will replace the existing Fehmarn Sound Bridge, which no longer meets future traffic requirements. It thus forms an essential part of the German rail connection to the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link.
DB InfraGO AG und DEGES setzen auf ein Partnering-Modell: Bauunternehmen und Vorhabenträger arbeiten bereits früh eng zusammen.
The combined immersed tunnel under the Fehmarn Sound will be around 2.2 kilometres long and will accommodate four lanes for road traffic and two tracks for rail traffic. This will create an efficient connection between the island of Fehmarn and the mainland of East Holstein. The existing bridge will remain in place and will be upgraded for slow traffic.
Partnership model for efficient implementation
DB InfraGO AG and DEGES are relying on an innovative partnering model: as part of a multi-party agreement, construction companies and project developers are already working closely together in the early project phase. The aim is integrated project management with a seamless transition from planning to construction.
PORR Spezialtiefbau will carry out the special civil engineering work for the tunnel and trough sections, dock construction pits including the dock tor, and soil improvement measures as part of the consortium. These services are part of the VP 6 SPT contract package. Construction of the special civil engineering works is scheduled to start in 2027 – they are among the first trades in the construction phase.
The new crossing is a key project for European transport infrastructure and is being financed by EU, federal and state funds. It meets the highest safety and performance requirements while also taking into account the landscape concerns of the region.
‘We are delighted to be contributing to this important infrastructure project together with our partners. The partnering model enables us to make a seamless transition from planning to construction and is a pioneering model for the future of construction,’ says Markus Wenke, Regional Technical Manager at PORR Spezialtiefbau.
