Salzbachtal Bridge near Wiesbaden: Second new section of bridge opens
/ Structural engineering
Wiesbaden, 4 August 2025 â Traffic is flowing again in both directions: on 1 August 2025, the second new section of the Salzbachtal Bridge was officially opened to traffic. ARGE PORR and Plauen Stahl Technologie were commissioned by Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes to construct two steel composite bridges with six reinforced concrete piers and four abutments, as well as a reinforced concrete bridge over the single-track Aartalbahn railway line. Following the opening of the southern Salzbachtal Bridge to traffic at the end of 2023, the second section of the bridge has now been opened.
The project is one of the most important infrastructure measures in the Rhine-Main region and, as part of the A66 motorway, is a central transport axis between Wiesbaden, Mainz and Frankfurt am Main. The project team welcomed numerous guests to the ceremony marking the opening of the northern superstructure to traffic, including Kaweh Mansoori, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Economics, Energy, Transport, Housing and Rural Affairs of the State of Hesse, and Gert-Uwe Mende, Lord Mayor of the state capital Wiesbaden, as well as a large number of representatives from the press.
Strong signal for infrastructure projects
The original 304-metre-long, four-lane Salzbachtal Bridge had to be demolished due to serious damage caused by age-related wear and tear and increasing heavy goods traffic. Following the accident on the south bridge in June 2021, both structures were dismantled in a controlled demolition using spectacular explosives.
ARGE PORR and Plauen Stahl Technologie were commissioned with the replacement construction. PORR Spezialtiefbau carried out the foundation work with 186 bored piles. The south bridge and the first section of the bridge were opened to traffic on schedule on 18 December 2023. The north bridge, the second section of the replacement construction, will now follow. The new bridge is already designed for the later six-lane expansion of the A66 motorway and takes into account modern requirements for noise protection and traffic flow.
âThe new Salzbachtal Bridge not only stands for modern engineering, but also for team spirit, precision and reliability. I would like to thank everyone involved who made this milestone possible with their great commitment and expertise,â says PORR project manager Salam Khuzandar.
