Sports hall
Berlin-Grünau, Germany / 2024
Nestled amongst woodland, sports facilities and the riverside landscapes of south-east Berlin, a new multi-purpose hall with an ancillary sports building is being constructed on the site of the Grünau Community School. The new building complements the existing school infrastructure and provides additional space for school and club sports. For the building’s foundations, PORR special civil engineering, on behalf of the Treptow-Köpenick District Office, carried out the deep foundations using Tubular steel piles.

Deep foundations for a new multi-purpose hall in south-east Berlin
New sports facilities in Berlin-Grünau
Covering a site area of around 2,100 m², a complex comprising a multi-purpose hall and associated sports facilities is being built. The design combines a tall hall structure with a lower-rise section housing changing rooms, storage areas and ancillary rooms. The site borders directly on existing sports facilities and is surrounded by woodland. Even before the future sports facilities can be used, the foundations of the building are being laid deep within the subsoil.
Tubular steel piles for deep foundations
The subsoil initially consists of fill, layers of peat and sandy soils. Load-bearing strata are only reached at greater depths. To transfer the loads from the sports hall and the sports facilities building, a total of 43 Tubular steel piles with a diameter of 40 cm and lengths of around 10 m were installed. The piles transfer the loads from the future structures into the load-bearing soil strata and form the foundation for the subsequent structural works. Prior to construction, the foundation was adapted to the ground conditions and the requirements of the new building.
Foundation on a limited construction site
Tubular steel piles were used for the deep foundation, employing the full displacement method. This method forms part of the Greenpile® product family from PORR Spezialtiefbau. Installation was carried out using internal pipe ramming. As the displacement method does not produce continuous soil excavation during construction, additional material movements within the construction site are kept to a minimum and work processes can be tailored to the requirements of the school site. The piles form the basis for the future foundations of the sports hall and the sports facilities building.
Work between the school, sports facilities and the woodland
The work took place within an existing school and sports environment. In addition to the ground conditions, the site’s boundary conditions, the adjacent sports facilities as well as the subsequent building works had to be taken into account. Step by step, the foundations were laid for the new building, which will in future complement the educational and sporting provision at the site.
The foundation for the new sports hall
Even before the hall spaces, stands and sports facilities became visible, the foundations of the new building were being laid beneath the ground. The completion of the steel-tube pile foundation laid the groundwork for the subsequent construction phases. Nestled between the woodland, sports facilities and the school campus, the foundation was thus laid for a new venue for school and club sports in Berlin-Grünau.
