Runway, Münster/Osnabrück Airport
Münster, Germany / 11.2022 - 11.2022
In November 2022, transport route engineering renovated the 2.2 km runway at Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) in the centre area, covering a width of 30 m. Due to the extensive modernisation measures, FMO was closed for two weeks, flight operations were suspended and the construction site was cordoned off from the rest of the air security area. The rapid and timely completion of the necessary construction work was therefore a top priority for the client. The transport route engineering team had a time window of one week for the main work.

Renewal in record time
Extension of service life
In the central area, which is regularly driven over, 4.5 cm of the surface layer was renewed over a width of 30 m and a length of 2,170 m. Asphalt preservation was carried out on the outer edge areas, which are not usually driven over. This is a proven effective way of preventively maintaining almost all asphalted traffic areas. Conservation can significantly increase the expected service life and actively contributes to the conservation of resources.
Replacement of secondary pipes and a new cable protection pipe route
All pipes in the runway centre line (RCL), touchdown zone (TDZ) as well as approach lighting (A PL) were replaced and re-laid. A new cable protection pipe route was used to connect station 07 and the main runway route. Parallel to the other main work, the lighting systems with around 760 lamps were renewed by third-party contractors. In the process, approximately 120 km of cable was laid. The new technology enables annual electricity savings of 230,000 kWh.
Goal-oriented thanks to effective planning and team spirit
To ensure that construction work ran smoothly, preparatory work began in mid-October in the taxiway area. In order to keep the promise of on-time completion, the renovation work was carried out around the clock in calendar week 46. This meant that air traffic could resume as planned on 30 November 2022 at 8 p.m. The transport route engineering team for this challenging project consisted of colleagues from the Münster/Dortmund and Osnabrück/Gütersloh branches, PORR mastic asphalt GmbH, as well as CMG Baulogistik, the asphalt experts from the in-house laboratory and Asphaltmischwerke Westfalen GmbH.
