Regensburg
Uni-Campus
Regensburg, Germany / 2023
A new workshop building for the natural sciences faculties is being constructed on the University of Regensburg campus and is due to be completed by 2026. The building comprises around 4,300 m² of usable floor space and will expand the university’s research and infrastructure facilities. PORR special civil engineering in München was responsible for carrying out the pile foundation works. The structural calculations and detailed design were prepared by PORR special civil engineering planning.

Precision deep foundations for the University of Regensburg’s workshop building
Frankipiles NG® for the deep foundations
Frankipiles NG® were used for load transfer. The piles were constructed as cast-in-place concrete driven piles using an internal pipe driving method. A total of 160 piles were constructed, with lengths of up to 16 m. Of these, 126 piles had a diameter of 56 cm as well as 34 piles with a diameter of 51 cm. The foundation elements transfer the loads of the future building into load-bearing soil layers and form the basis for the subsequent structural works.
Adaptation to varying ground conditions
The ground conditions on the campus feature varying layer depths and bearing capacities. The pile lengths were therefore adapted to the respective depths of the load-bearing soil layers. The Frankipile NG® from the Greenpile® product family of PORR Spezialtiefbau was used for the deep foundations. The full-displacement method enables the piles to be constructed without continuous soil excavation and was tailored to the requirements of the university site.
Work in the vicinity of sensitive facilities
The specialist groundworks were carried out within an existing university campus. Buildings housing laboratory and research facilities are located in the immediate vicinity of the construction site. The construction work was adapted to the constraints of ongoing university operations. The works were subject to time constraints and were monitored using measurement technology. The foundation works were thus carried out whilst the campus remained in use.
Planning and execution
PORR special civil engineering has already been involved on several occasions in the modernisation of the university campus. For the workshop building, PORR special civil engineering Planning carried out the structural calculations and the detailed design for the deep foundations. The planning formed the basis for the execution of the pile foundations and the coordination of the works with the other construction phases on the campus.
The foundation for the new workshop building
Even before the workshops, laboratory spaces and technical facilities can become operational, the foundations for the new building are being laid deep in the subsoil. The installation of the Frankipile NG® laid the groundwork for the subsequent construction phases. This marks the creation of another building block for research, teaching and technical infrastructure on the Regensburg University campus.
