Tubular steel pile
Displacement pile in accordance with DIN EN 12 699

The tubular steel pile is a displacement and precast pile in accordance with DIN EN 12699. It is used as a deep foundation element for various structures. As the soil is completely displaced, no conventional excavated soil is produced during construction. This can be taken into account when planning transport, logistics and waste disposal concepts.

Installation requires comparatively little equipment and space. Consequently, the method is also suitable for projects with limited space.

Steel is a metallic material that can be returned to the material cycle following dismantling. The choice of materials, the construction process and the pile dimensions vary depending on the project requirements and the selected design. With displacement piles, no conventional drill cuttings are produced. The tubular steel pile can be used as part of the Greenpile® system.

Examples of applications include:

  • Industrial buildings
  • Electricity and mobile phone masts
  • Pipelines
  • Construction projects with height restrictions and confined spaces
  • Projects requiring a small number of piles
  • Construction projects on contaminated sites without conventional soil excavation

Benefits / Features

Tubular steel piles are used, as well as in projects with a small number of piles as well as in confined spaces.

  • Construction: Installation method with a construction speed depending on the project
  • Operating conditions: Can also be used in confined spaces
  • Pile lengths: Extension of the pipes as well as long pile lengths possible
  • Soil management: Full-displacement method without conventional drill cuttings
  • Load transfer: Capable of resisting horizontal loads and bending moments
  • Ground conditions: Can also be used in soft soil layers as well as where groundwater is corrosive to concrete
  • Construction method: Relatively low-noise installation through internal pipe driving
  • Material usage: Slender pile cross-sections with material requirements depending on the project

Basics
Tubular steel pile

The design and manufacture of tubular steel piles are carried out in accordance with Eurocode 7 and DIN EN 12699, as well as the recommendations of the ‘Piles’ Working Group (EA-Pfähle). Standard pipe diameters are 219, 356 and 406 mm. The loads and pipe diameters must be tailored to the respective ground conditions. We would be happy to consult with you on this.

A starter pipe, which is sealed at the base, is driven into the ground using an internal pipe-driving method. If necessary, extension pipes are fitted and
welded all round, so that the work can continue. Once the final depth has been reached, the pipes can be backfilled with concrete and fitted with a head reinforcement as a connection reinforcement.
The steel pipes remain entirely in the ground and act as additional protection against water that is aggressive to concrete or soft strata. Excess pipe lengths are cut off once the required depth has been reached. The steel profile alone is capable of bearing the loads.

The low weight of the steel pipes to be driven allows the pile fabrication to be performed using a small, compact machine. This means that the piles can be installed even in very confined
and difficult spaces. The internal pipe driving method enables the piles to be driven into the subsoil gently and with virtually no vibration, even in the immediate vicinity of existing buildings.

Variants
the tubular steel pile

The following design variants are available for tubular steel piles:

  • Vertical or inclined piles
  • Compression and/or tension piles
  • Piles with head reinforcement or reinforced along the entire length of the pile

Quality assurance

To ensure quality during construction, the requirements of European and national standards must be observed. The design and manufacture of tubular steel piles are carried out in accordance with Eurocode 7 and DIN EN 12 699, as well as the recommendations of the ‘Piles’ Working Group (EA-Pfähle). Self-monitoring and documentation of the construction work are governed by the manufacturing standards.

The installation of tubular steel piles requires a set of procedures individually coordinated with the requirements of the project in question.

We ensure a high standard of workmanship through:

  • Individually coordinated procedures
  • Compliance with the requirements of DIN EN 12 699, Eurocode 7 and EA-Pfähle
  • Clear processes via our quality management system in accordance with DIN EN 9001:2015
  • Static or dynamic pile load testing
  • Vibration measurements
  • Continuous monitoring of the grouting material
  • Digital monitoring and evaluation of production parameters
