Barbaratag in Forbach: tradition meets innovation
Forbach, / Tunneling
On 4 December, tunnel builders around the world celebrate St. Barbara's Day – the name day of St. Barbara, patron saint of miners. At the underground construction site at EnBW's Rudolf Fettweis plant in Forbach, our teams also pause for a moment to perform the traditional blessing and pray for protection from accidents. This centuries-old tradition serves as a reminder of how important camaraderie, concentration and competence are in the demanding everyday work underground.

The conversion of the Rudolf Fettweis plant into a modern pumped storage power station is progressing rapidly: the PORR Tunnelbau team has completed almost all of the tunnelling work, with only tunnel 2 still under construction. At the beginning of November, the suction pipes were successfully installed in the Murg plant by machine supplier Andritz Hydro. At the same time, concrete work is being carried out in the power plant cavern of the Schwarzenbach plant and safety work in the Schwarzenbach shaft.
The conversion of the listed Forbach hydroelectric power plant into a modern pumped storage power plant is laying the foundation for efficient and flexible electricity storage. The new lower reservoir makes it possible to pump water up as often as required and use it to generate electricity – a decisive step for the energy transition.
