Precision in 32 hours: installation of VFT girders marks progress at transport hub
Marzahn , / Structural engineering
The Marzahn transport hub, one of the central infrastructure points in Berlin's Marzahn district, is currently undergoing extensive modernisation. The large-scale project encompasses the intersection of Landsberger Allee and Märkische Allee as well as Deutsche Bahn's long-distance and suburban railway tracks. On behalf of the State of Berlin – represented by the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment – PORR Engineering's Berlin office is working with KEMNA BAU Ost GmbH & Co. KG to construct the new buildings at bridge junctions 2 and 3 of this important transport hub. The aim is to expand the transport infrastructure in a future-proof manner and to meet the increasing demands of mobility and climate protection.
Precision in 32 hours
The implementation planning began in January 2025, with construction starting in April. Two new bridges are planned – one in steel composite and one in reinforced concrete, including an overpass over existing railway facilities. In addition, 13 retaining walls and four underpasses will be built. Further measures include the demolition of an existing bridge, around 55,400 m³ of earthworks, the installation of 1,877 m² of steel sheet piling and 3,030 tonnes of reinforcing steel. In addition, 374 tonnes of steel structures will be erected. The scope of services ranges from planning and demolition to reinforced concrete construction, waterproofing and railing work.
Important milestones have been reached in recent weeks, clearly demonstrating the progress of the project. On 25 November 2025, the traffic diversion on Märkische Allee was successfully completed – an essential step for the following construction phases. This was preceded by the installation of the prefabricated parts for structure 8n in section A10–A20 on 11 and 12 November.
Next milestone in March 2026
On 26 November, the construction site for section A30 was handed over, clearing another central area for the upcoming work. The closure period for structure 9n from 29 November to 1 December was completed on schedule. Within 32 hours, 17 VFT girders were installed over the track system onto the new abutments. These closely coordinated work steps illustrate the complex interlocking of the construction process.
The PORR civil engineering team already has its sights set on the next major milestone: the installation of the prefabricated components for structure 8n in section A20–A30 is planned for March 2026. This measure will once again significantly advance the project and lay the foundation for the final work.
Once completed, traffic flow in eastern Berlin will be noticeably improved. The project will provide lasting relief for the entire area, optimise mobility for all road users and make an important contribution to the future viability of the region and to improving the quality of life.
