Progress under Europa-Allee: Construction of the Güterplatz underground station enters the next phase

Frankfurt, / Structural engineering / Press Release

An important part of Frankfurt’s transport infrastructure is currently being built beneath Europa-Allee on behalf of SBEV – Stadtbahn Entwicklung und Verkehrsinfrastrukturprojekte Frankfurt GmbH: the new Güterplatz underground station on the U5 line is taking shape. The PORR Ingenieurbau team has made significant progress in recent weeks, thereby reaching another milestone in connecting the Europaviertel to the local public transport network.

The image shows a dense, modern urban landscape from a bird’s-eye view: in the foreground, several tall, glass-clad residential and office towers rise skywards. A large construction site stretches between two particularly striking towers: several red construction cranes can be seen, along with a deep excavation pit and structures under construction that run lengthways across the site. The construction site appears to be a major development project, nestled amongst existing high-rise buildings. Surrounding the towers are lower-rise buildings with green or technically utilised roofs. Some feature roof terraces, geometrically laid-out paths and circular building elements that form a stark contrast to the angular high-rises. Roads, railway tracks and traffic areas criss-cross the neighbourhood, emphasising its urban density.

The new Güterplatz underground station on Frankfurt’s U5 line is gradually taking shape.

Since February 2026, the external walls of the future station have been largely completed. The building’s shell is thus almost fully enclosed. Whilst the upper edge of the station is already visible from the outside, work continues apace inside. At the station’s ends, the internal walls for two technical facilities are being constructed in parallel – a complex interplay of numerous trades working in a very confined space.

Station ceiling growing section by section

Above the construction workers’ heads, too, the structural work is progressing rapidly. Eight of the 14 ceiling sections have already been concreted. In the area of Block 1, the next major step is imminent; this section is due to be concreted by the end of April. This would mean the station ceiling is almost fully completed. Only in the area of Block 7 will individual sections of the station ceiling then still be missing. These are also due to be concreted by September 2026, thereby fully closing the station ceiling.

Temporary structures are being removed

As the structural work progresses, the gradual dismantling of the temporary structures begins. The reinforced concrete and steel struts that secured the excavation pit at depth during construction are being removed one by one. Twelve of the 26 reinforced concrete struts from the first layer and 21 of the 50 steel struts have already been dismantled; with four more to follow shortly. Each of the removed struts is a visible sign that the structure can now permanently withstand the enormous loads from earth and water pressure.

Daylight for the underground space

As construction progresses, the future shape of the station is becoming increasingly clear. The light domes, which channel daylight into the underground station, are being constructed from in-situ concrete.

With every completed concrete pour, not only is a new underground station taking shape, but another building block for mobility in Frankfurt’s Europaviertel. The extension of the U5 underground line will reliably carry thousands of passengers every day in future and connect the neighbourhood even more closely with the city centre.
