The thermal storage facility will one day tower 51 metres above the Tiefstack Energy Park. But before Hamburg’s new landmark of the heat transition can rise into the sky, a foundation had first to be laid that could safely support millions of litres of hot water. It is precisely this milestone that has now been achieved.

With the successful construction of the circular reinforced concrete base slab, PORR building construction Nord has now completed an important phase of the project. The slab measures 37 metres in diameter, is 1.20 metres thick and forms the foundation for the future heat storage facility. Around 1,600 m³ of concrete was poured during a large-scale concreting operation.

From the foundations to the energy transition

Before the building construction team could take over, PORR Special Civil Engineering had already laid the groundwork for this major project. The construction of the deep foundations laid the groundwork for one of the most significant infrastructure projects in Hamburg’s energy transition. PORR Hochbau Nord then took over the construction site, as well as responsibility for the foundations, construction work and project management.

The progress of the construction work also highlights the close integration of PORR’s areas of expertise. What began with the special civil engineering works was seamlessly continued by the building construction team. Even the construction of the base slab required precise coordination between all parties involved. From preparation through to concreting and curing, the teams worked hand in hand to ensure everything ran smoothly.

Next step: the thermal storage facility rises

The completion of the base slab also marks the end of the final joint construction phase between special civil engineering and building construction for the future thermal storage facility. Following the handover of the construction site, a specialist firm will now undertake the construction of the actual storage tank.

However, PORR’s work at the site is not yet complete: PORR building construction Nord will subsequently take over the construction of the adjacent technical building and support the project as it progresses.

The foundation for a forward-looking energy project

The successful completion of the base slab demonstrates how complex infrastructure projects can only succeed through the collaboration of different specialist disciplines. With the foundation now in place, not only is a structure rising in Tiefstack, but an important building block is also being laid for Hamburg’s climate-friendly heat supply and, consequently, for the local energy transition.
