A Career Built by PORR: From Dual-Track Student to Junior Construction Manager

Kaiserslautern, / Government Services / Career

For Leon, one thing is certain: “I’m staying at PORR.” He is the first of currently three dual-track students at PORR Government Services to successfully complete his Bachelor of Engineering degree. He completed his studies over the course of three years in collaboration with PORR Government Services. He will now be joining the team in Kaiserslautern in his new role as site manager. We asked him about it:

Why did you choose PORR Government Services?

I got to know and appreciate the company through my father, who had already worked for PORR. I particularly liked the friendly, family-like atmosphere, the regional connection, of course, but above all the diversity of the projects.

What were your expectations, and were they met?

As a student specializing in “Construction Operations and Management,” I was worried that my time at PORR would be too theoretical, but that concern proved unfounded from the very beginning. A great deal of emphasis was placed on giving me plenty of hands-on experience on the construction sites. I’d like to take this opportunity to especially thank my two mentors, Hubert and Elke. Although both of them have immense responsibilities, they always took the time to impart a great deal of practical knowledge to me. They fully integrated me into all the processes of various activities. In general, there is a respectful and appreciative atmosphere on the construction sites. That made me very happy.

Were there any particular challenges?

I was assigned my own project quite early on: the installation of a ventilation system in a fitness studio. Unfortunately, I then suffered a stroke of bad luck. I received an enormous amount of support, both here on-site and from our corporate group. The focus was on me as a person. I am now fully back on my feet, and the project has been successfully completed. An experience like that at the start of your career leaves a lasting impression.

Your plans for the future?

Quite clearly: to stay at PORR (laughs).

And finally: What advice would you give to a first-year student?

Stay on top of things. There are times during your studies when the workload is incredibly heavy, but the effort is worth it. I’ve made my dream come true here.

We congratulate Leon on earning his Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering with a specialization in Construction Management and warmly welcome him to PORR Government Services!
