Underground construction for transport, infrastructure and hydraulic engineering projects

Tunnelling involves the creation of underground structures for transport routes, infrastructure and utility networks. Planning and execution take place whilst taking into account the geological, technical and project-specific constraints.

PORR carries out tunnelling projects using a variety of tunnelling technologies and construction methods. Both conventional and mechanised tunnelling methods are used for various tunnel cross-sections and ground conditions.

Tunnelling technologies used

  • Conventional tunnelling according to the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NÖT)
  • Mechanised tunnelling with tunnel boring machines (TBMs) ranging from 2.5 m to over 13 m in diameter
    • Hard rock tunnelling with gripper TBMs and cast-in-situ concrete lining
    • Shield tunnelling with tubbing lining or combined lining
    • Hydraulic shield tunnelling with fluid-supported working face
    • Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnelling with working face support
    • Multimode tunnelling with alternating operating modes
  • Pipe jacking using the full-cut or partial-cut method with pipe diameters from 1.5 m to over 4 m
