PORR completes the rehabilitation of the B 70 in Borken ten weeks ahead of schedule

Construction work on the B 70 federal road in Borken has been successfully completed well ahead of schedule. On behalf of the Straßen.NRW Münsterland regional branch, the team from PORR transport route engineering Münster has comprehensively modernised a key section of the transport corridor. Thanks to optimised project management, the work was completed around ten weeks ahead of the originally agreed completion date.
The rehabilitation of a key section of the B 70 has been completed.
The project centred on the comprehensive refurbishment of several traffic junctions as well as the adjacent open stretch of road. For instance, the junction where the B 70 meets Raesfelder Straße as well as Bleekenweg was upgraded to a modern, traffic-light-controlled junction. Furthermore, PORR optimised the junctions with the B 67 as well as the Nordring to improve the flow of traffic in the long term.
A particularly visible result of the project is the redesign of the road cross-section: the carriageway, which was previously around twelve metres wide, has been reduced to seven metres. The space gained as a result benefits the natural environment, as additional areas along the B 70 are no longer sealed off, thereby creating new habitats.
High construction output in a short time
The project was characterised by a demanding scope of works. In addition to extensive earthworks, PORR carried out road construction work here, a very large proportion of which consisted of asphalt works. At the same time, however, various paving works were also carried out as part of the redevelopment of the junctions, as well as to improve the site’s drainage. In total, around 70,000 square metres of asphalt binder and surface courses were laid, as well as several thousand tonnes of asphalt base course and ground stabilisation works (HGT).
The construction phasing plan originally envisaged presented a particular challenge. Parts of the work were initially intended to be carried out whilst traffic was restricted to one side of the road, which proved to be inefficient as the project progressed.
By recognising this inefficiency before construction began, engaging in dialogue with the client, making the necessary adjustments to the construction concept and switching to a full road closure, the project team succeeded in significantly speeding up the process. The result: more efficient implementation and completion of the project around ten weeks ahead of schedule.
Greater safety and improved mobility
With the modernisation of the B 70, PORR is making an important contribution to improving the regional transport infrastructure. Road users will in future benefit from a more efficient road link, optimised traffic management and greater safety for cyclists.
