After two years of construction, PORR Government Services has successfully completed the comprehensive refurbishment of the accommodation building in Baumholder.

On behalf of the US Army Corps of Engineers, PORR Government Services carried out the complete renovation of the troop accommodation building from November 2023 onwards. The previous apartments were functional but unattractive. In December 2025, the project was handed over on schedule and within budget.

An intelligent redesign created bright, spacious rooms with room for walk-in wardrobes, modern sanitary areas and fitted kitchens. Communal kitchens and lounges on each floor and a humidity-controlled exhaust air system ensure a pleasant living environment. Additional office space and storage space were created in the attic. Nevertheless, a piece of tradition has been preserved: the original tiles in the corridors retain the typical barracks character.

The 30 apartments not only meet modern American and German living standards, but also strict security requirements. They are equipped with an access control system, a fire alarm and voice alarm system, and bullet-resistant windows and doors in accordance with AT/FP specifications.

Technical challenges mastered

Space first had to be created for the installation of a sprinkler system with a fire water tank. To this end, the vaulted ceiling above the basement was replaced by a reinforced concrete slab covering an area of 60 square metres. To ensure the stability of the exterior walls, the concrete was poured in sections. This eliminated the risk of collapse.

Another challenge was the district heating pressure maintenance system, which had to remain in operation throughout the entire construction period in order to supply the surrounding buildings with heat. Here, special attention was paid to protecting this system and ensuring its uninterrupted functionality.

Project manager Daniel Rath emphasises: ‘Our team demonstrated its expertise and successfully mastered all challenges. This is also confirmed by the positive feedback we received from the building operator even before the final inspection.’
