The A4 motorway links central Germany with Poland and is one of Germany’s most important east-west links. A section of the carriageway in the direction of Aachen between the Ohorn and Burkau junctions has been resurfaced. Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes commissioned a joint venture comprising the PORR Berlin transport route engineering branch and PORR Gussasphalt GmbH to carry out the work. A new surface course made of mastic asphalt was laid over a length of around 4.3 km.

Resurfacing of the carriageway on the A4 between Ohorn and Burkau
Mastic asphalt for heavily used traffic areas
For the road resurfacing, a top layer of MA 8 S mastic asphalt was used, incorporating viscosity-modified bitumen 25/35 VL as well as Trinidad Epuré (TE) natural asphalt. The laid thickness was 3.5 cm.
In road construction, mastic asphalt is used, amongst other things, on heavily trafficked road surfaces. It is laid without the need for additional rollers, as the material achieves the required compaction through its inherent properties.
Work in confined spaces
Before laying the actual surface course, mastic asphalt kerbs were constructed along the edges of the carriageway. The road surface was then laid in two sections, 5.4 m and 5.1 m wide respectively.
Including the necessary working spaces, a width of only around 7 m was available between the edge of the carriageway and the safety barrier. The local conditions therefore influenced both the construction schedule and the logistics on site.
Production of the road surface
Following the laying of the surface course, crushed aggregate was spread to achieve the required surface properties, in accordance with the specifications of the ZTV Asphalt. The works were carried out within the planned construction schedule and comprised the resurfacing of a section of the A4 approximately 4.3 km long in the direction of Aachen.
Part of the ongoing maintenance of the motorway network
The resurfacing of carriageways is one of the regular measures involved in road maintenance. On the A4, in addition to the laying of the new surface course, the work focused on the specific requirements of mastic asphalt laying as well as the constraints of a motorway construction site.
