The A45 motorway, also known as the ‘Sauerland Line’, connects the Ruhr region with the Rhine-Main region and is one of the most important north-south links in western Germany. The high volume of traffic places particular demands on the maintenance and renewal of the infrastructure. The PORR Münster/Dortmund branch was commissioned to carry out a complete rehabilitation of a section of the motorway between the Drolshagen and Meinerzhagen junctions in the direction of Dortmund.

Road resurfacing over a distance of seven kilometres
The works involved the refurbishment of approximately 110,000 m² of carriageway. In the area around the junction, the three lanes as well as the hard shoulder were resurfaced in sections over a distance of approximately seven kilometres. In addition, the slip roads were given a new road structure. As part of the works, the surface course, binder course and base course were removed and subsequently rebuilt.
Implementation in several construction phases
The project was divided into eight construction phases. During the runtime, various traffic management schemes were implemented to enable work to be carried out on the individual sections one after the other. The works took place across several time slots and were carried out in multi-shift operations. Services such as traffic safety measures, protective systems and road marking works were carried out under separate specialist contracts and integrated into the overall project.
As part of the project, some 134,000 m² of asphalt surfaces were laid. In addition, the works comprised approximately 24,780 m³ of milling, 11,150 m³ of concrete demolition as well as around 23,000 m of hard shoulder works.
Rehabilitation of a major transport corridor
The project on the A45 combines asphalt, earthworks and concrete construction works within a heavily used section of motorway. In addition to the resurfacing of the carriageway, the project focused in particular on the phased execution of works, the changing traffic management arrangements as well as the coordination of various specialist lots.
