Expansion of a major transport hub

The Düsseldorf-Süd motorway junction connects the transport routes towards Düsseldorf, Wuppertal and Cologne. As part of the overall project, the A46 between the junction and the Düsseldorf-Eller slip road is being widened to six lanes.

PORR’s work involved connecting newly constructed ramps and trough structures. Upon completion of the traffic management system, the individual traffic flows within the junction were reorganised and channelled onto the rebuilt structures.

Road construction between existing and new structures

The connection works formed an interface between existing traffic areas and the civil engineering structures erected previously. The individual construction phases had to be co-ordinated with the ongoing work of other project stakeholders. The work was carried out in an environment characterised by changing traffic routing and a large number of construction phases that built upon one another.

Coordination of numerous project stakeholders

The works required ongoing coordination between the client, the planning team and the contractors. Changes to traffic management had to be integrated into the construction processes and coordinated with the respective construction phases. This resulted in close interlinking between road construction, traffic management and the civil engineering structures that had already been completed.

Part of a long-term expansion project

The work at the Düsseldorf-Süd motorway junction formed part of a multi-year infrastructure project along the A46. In addition to the widening of the carriageway, the focus was particularly on the gradual integration of new structures and the adaptation of traffic management. The project highlights the wide range of different trades and construction phases that interact in the further development of existing transport infrastructure.
