Injection techniques for stabilising the foundations of old buildings

Built during the Imperial era, the building has been a defining feature of Halle’s cityscape for more than a century. During the rehabilitation, the focus was not only on the existing buildings themselves but also on the ground conditions. The subsoil consisted of fill and mud over layers of river sand and river gravel. To enable the building’s future development, the subsoil in the area of the load-bearing walls was treated using grouting techniques.

Subsoil improvement beneath the existing structure

Around 250 grouting lances were installed for the work. Cement slurry was injected into the subsoil beneath the foundations via these lances. The grouted bodies were created along the load-bearing walls and now form an integral part of the foundation beneath the historic building. This laid the groundwork for the subsequent rehabilitation and extension works within the listed building.

Work in confined spaces

The subsoil improvement took place within an existing building as well as under the constraints of an inner-city location. The injection method used could be adapted to the available space and working heights. This made it possible to carry out the work even in areas with limited access. The work was carried out inside the existing building, whilst further measures for the rehabilitation and revitalisation of the structure were taking place in parallel.

The foundation for rehabilitation

The subsoil improvement work provided a key building block for the rehabilitation of the Old Police Headquarters. Even before the new flats became visible, the foundations were laid beneath the building for the further development of the listed building and its future use.
