Halle (Saale)
Old police headquarters

Halle (Saale), Germany / 01.2022 - 06.2024

The listed "Old Police Headquarters" in Halle (Saale), built in the imperial era, was renovated after a long period of vacancy. By spring 2024, 99 high-quality 1- to 4-room flats with living spaces between 21 and 100 square metres were created, as well as a commercial unit on the ground floor. To prevent future settlement cracks in the masonry, the team from the Chemnitz branch was commissioned to consolidate the subsoil below the foundations. An environmentally friendly, low-noise and vibration-free injection technique was chosen.

Safe injection technology for stabilising the foundations of old buildings

Soil compaction as prevention of settlement cracks

The subsoil consisted of backfill and muck over layers of river sand and river gravel. In the past, it had proven to be very sensitive to settlement and had led to settlement cracks in the masonry.

By injecting cement suspension via 250 injection lances, the surrounding soil was compacted along the load-bearing walls and the load-bearing capacity improved.

Injection process also suitable for restricted spaces

Branch manager Lew Schwarz explains: "Under the PORR umbrella, we are one of the specialists for building refurbishment. We know how sensitively you have to act in inner-city environments and especially when revitalising a listed gem like the Old Police Headquarters." The injection method used is quick and easy to use, vibration-free, quiet and suitable for limited space with restricted working heights.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
