New nursery and school campus with views in the Baakenhafen neighbourhood

A nursery as part of an educational complex

The building was constructed in the Baakenhafen quarter and, together with a neighbouring primary school, forms a cohesive educational complex. The nursery is designed to accommodate up to 250 children and also houses other facilities within the building. In addition to the childcare areas, the building will house a vocational college, a parents’ café as well as a family advice centre.

Eight storeys with play and recreation areas

The nursery’s spaces are distributed from the ground floor up to the upper storeys. The layout includes group rooms, exercise and communal areas, as well as play and recreation areas on several levels.

The roof terrace also features a play area and a children’s restaurant. Green open spaces within the building structure and vertical greening on the upper-storey façades complement the building’s design.

Architecture centred around two main building blocks

The architectural design was created by Werk Arkitekter and further developed and implemented by Limbrock Tubbesing Architects and Urban Planners. Two main building blocks, designed to resemble ‘tree trunks’, house fixed functional areas. The group rooms, as well as flexible activity and communal areas, are arranged around these cores.

Building construction and special civil engineering in a single project

PORR Hochbau was responsible for the general contracting services, whilst PORR Spezialtiefbau took charge of the planning and execution of the construction pits as well as the deep foundations. The foundation works formed the structural basis for the subsequent eight-storey building.

Space for childcare and further educational provision

The new building in Baakenhafen has created the physical conditions for childcare, education and family services to be provided in a single location. The combination of a nursery, a vocational college, counselling services and complementary communal areas extends the building’s use beyond mere childcare and integrates it into the neighbouring educational hub.
