The educational and cultural centre OCC is established in The Hague (Netherlands). The building was designed by Jo Coenen and Patrick Fransen (NOAHH). From 2020, four important cultural institutions will be accommodated in the OCC.
The general contractor for the demolition, the foundation and the turnkey new building is the CADANZ consortium, consisting of companies of the Volker Wessels Group. FRANKI was commissioned by Volker Staal en Funderingen bv (VSF) in June 2017 to establish the foundation in cooperation and partnership with VSF. The planned foundation consists of 110 diaphragm wall battens measuring 2.80 m x 1.0 m or 2.80 m x 0.6 m with slot depths between 24 m and 42 m and 60 bored piles.
Even for our experienced professionals, the project offered some extraordinary challenges that had to be mastered for technical success: Almost all battens and piles had to be placed through the existing underground car park. For this purpose, a 50 cm thick concrete slab was laid on the ceiling above the first Basement floor of the demolition parking garage as a working level and construction aid and vertically stiffened.

The new cultural centre of The Hague.
The groundwater level had to be lowered from 2 m below the top edge of the building to 6.5 m below it and was then about 1 m lower than the existing floor slab of the second basement floor of the old underground car park. Since the site did not have a watertight enclosure, our expertise was also in demand here. Only when the lowering target was reached could the existing floor slab and foundations be broken open by the consortium for a planned weekly production of 10 battens and 10 piles and a watertight steel structure to be connected could be erected. After each of the groundwater drainage had been shut down, the slits and piles were installed, supported by slurry, to a depth of 42 m by the steel structure guide.
The FRANKI Grundbau team was able to successfully complete from the total work for the new foundation 1,400 running metres or 2,975 m² of the diaphragm wall battens of both dimensions in 3 months.
