Bersenbrück, Germany / 2022

Bokeler Straße (County Road 142) connects several localities in the Bersenbrück area and forms part of the regional road network in the district of Osnabrück. As part of a refurbishment project, the PORR Osnabrück branch renewed the verges along the route. Around two kilometres of open-pored concrete verges were laid. In addition, the project involved the dismantling and disposal of the existing verges, the construction of a 16 cm thick crushed stone base course, as well as the subsequent backfilling and finishing of the work areas.

Verge restoration on Bokeler Straße in Bersenbrück

First use of hard-surfaced verge concrete on District Road 142

Hard-surfaced verge concrete was used for the first time on District Road 142. Compared with other verge designs, such as gravel verges, compacted earth verges or grass pavers, it represents a further option for road construction. The project formed part of the renewal of the roadside areas and was carried out along a section of road approximately two kilometres long.

Open-pored concrete for verge construction

The concrete used has a high void content, allowing rainwater to infiltrate through the verge surface. The laid thickness and the material properties can be adapted to the respective traffic loads and local conditions. The work was carried out without joints. Furthermore, the hard shoulder fulfils functions at the edge of the carriageway and is designed to withstand varying traffic loads.

Construction during the winter months

The works were carried out in November and December. Weather conditions, as well as adjustments to the slipform paver and the sensing technology, influenced the construction process and required coordination of the individual work stages.

Ongoing testing during construction

During the works, the site team collaborated with the company’s own materials laboratory. This laboratory carried out on-site monitoring and testing of the materials used as well as the work performed. The tests accompanied the construction of the hard shoulder surfaces throughout the entire project.

Road construction using different methods

The work on County Road 142 illustrates the challenges associated with the renewal of roadside areas. In addition to the construction of the verges, the focus was on coordinating construction processes during the winter months as well as adapting the paving technique to local conditions.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
