Marbach viaduct on the A45

Dillenburg, Germany / 11.2014 - 07.2020

The A45 motorway runs between Dortmund and the Rhine-Main region and is being upgraded in stages. As part of this work, the existing Marbach viaduct was replaced with a new structure. PORR was commissioned to carry out the project. In addition to the demolition of the existing structure, the project also involved the construction of new bridges as well as associated infrastructure along the motorway.

Construction of a replacement viaduct as part of the A45 motorway project

New construction whilst traffic continues to flow

At the start of the works, traffic was diverted onto the existing bridge section in the Frankfurt direction. This was followed by the dismantling of the bridge section in the Dortmund direction and the construction of the first new bridge section. Once this was completed, traffic was diverted onto the new bridge. This created the conditions for the dismantling of the second existing bridge section and the subsequent construction of the second bridge section.

Upon completion of the works, the temporary traffic management arrangements were removed and the lanes were returned to their final positions.

Bridge construction and infrastructure works

In addition to the bridge structures, the contract included the construction of a rainwater retention basin, the associated drainage channels, noise barriers, site access roads as well as roadworks in the vicinity of the A45. The works were carried out in stages and co-ordinated with the respective traffic phases on the motorway.

Seven-span viaduct

The new structure was constructed as a seven-span viaduct comprising two parallel sections. At five of the eight substructure axes, the foundation work was carried out using large-diameter bored piles up to 16 m in length. At three axes, reinforced concrete foundations were laid directly on the bedrock.

Each superstructure rests on six piers and two abutments. The spans of the composite steel superstructure range from 45.7 m to 69 m. The superstructure cross-section consists of two single-cell steel box girders per carriageway direction with a loosely reinforced deck slab.

Part of the A45 upgrade

The replacement bridge is part of the comprehensive works along the A45. In addition to the new bridge structures, roadworks, drainage systems and noise barriers are also being constructed. The project creates the structural conditions for the future route alignment in this section of the motorway and supports the gradual expansion of the transport infrastructure along the A45.e superstructure cross-section is made up of two single-cell hollow steel boxes per direction of travel and untensioned carriageway slab.
