Mercator One

Office and commercial building on the station forecourt

Mercator One is situated on Portsmouthplatz, directly adjacent to Duisburg Central Station. The design by Hamburg-based architect Hadi Teherani forms part of the development of the station forecourt.

The building’s form is characterised by fanned-out external walls. On each storey, the end walls open out by 2.70 m and the long sides by 30 cm. The façade design is complemented by coloured lines of light.

Cantilevered building sides

The geometry of the structure required intensive formwork and scaffolding planning, as well as a significant amount of surveying work during construction. The concrete slabs cantilever out by up to 13.5 m on the sides of the building.

For the façade construction, the load on the cantilevered components was simulated on site using filled water tanks and stacks of stones. Accompanying measurements confirmed the deflections previously calculated by structural analysis.

Aluminium façade with triple glazing

The anthracite-coloured, grid-patterned façade consists of 90 per cent aluminium alloy, with an end-of-life recycling rate of 75 per cent. The façade was fitted with triple glazing.

Intensive greening was planned for the technical roof and the roof terrace on the sixth floor.

Technical fittings for the office spaces

The office spaces make up the majority of the total 10,000 m² of usable floor area. On the ground floor, commercial buildings and catering spaces totalling 1,200 m² complement the usage concept.

New development on Duisburg’s station forecourt

Mercator One, a mixed-use office and commercial building featuring office, retail and catering spaces, has been completed on Portsmouthplatz. The fanned-out building volume and the concrete slabs, which cantilever out by up to 13.5 m, define the structure and external design of the seven-storey building.
