PORR building construction West carried out the turnkey extension of the Montessori Primary School on Farnweg on behalf of IPM Immobilien Projektmanagement Düsseldorf GmbH. The contract encompassed both the construction work and the associated detailed design. The new building adds space for teaching, childcare and catering to the existing school.

Extension to the Montessori primary school
More space for teaching and all-day care
The extension has created around 1,300 m² of additional usable floor space for the Montessori primary school. The new rooms are allocated to various school functions and complement the existing teaching and childcare areas. The building work was carried out from September 2017 to October 2018 whilst the school remained open.
Two building blocks and a connecting central section
The new building comprises two two-storey blocks arranged at an angle to one another, each with a gable roof. Between them lies a two-storey section with a flat roof, housing the canteen and a ‘cook-and-chill’ kitchen. Whilst the eastern section of the building houses classrooms and specialised teaching rooms, the western section provides group rooms and multi-purpose rooms for the all-day school programme (OGS).
Barrier-free access between the new building and the existing structure
A lift system connects the extension to the existing school building. This ensures barrier-free access to all areas of the school. The new and existing buildings are thus also linked vertically.
Concrete construction with different ceiling systems
Around 2,121 m³ of concrete and 110 t of reinforcing steel were used for the extension. In addition, 110 m² of prestressed concrete slabs were installed, as well as around 992 m³ of concrete that was replaced during the foundation works. The façade surfaces were finished with, amongst other things, around 650 m² of fine-textured plaster.
Building whilst lessons continue
A key constraint was that the work had to be carried out whilst the school remained in operation. Construction processes and site organisation were therefore adapted to the requirements of ongoing lessons. Consequently, the extension was built directly on the school premises whilst they were in use.
Additional spaces for everyday school life
The extension provides additional spaces for teaching, differentiated learning, all-day care and catering for the pupils. Thanks to the connection to the existing building, these areas are accessible without barriers at the existing school site.
