The Neue Pinakothek is one of Munich’s most significant museum buildings. As part of the comprehensive refurbishment, numerous structural and technical measures were carried out to adapt the building to the future requirements of museum operations. For the foundation works on the existing structure, PORR special civil engineering region Süd, Munich branch, was awarded the contract to carry out jet grouting work inside the historic building. The client was Pfeiffer Baugesellschaft mbH.

Restoration of the museum’s historical collection
Work on Listed Buildings
Since 2019, the Neue Pinakothek has been undergoing extensive modernisation. The works include, as well as new technical installations, lift shafts and modifications to improve access to and the use of the building. The work took place within an existing museum building. Limited space, existing foundation structures and the requirements of the listed building determined the planning and execution of the works. Even before the future exhibition and technical areas became visible, the groundwork for the subsequent construction phases was laid beneath the building.
Jet grouting for foundation reinforcement
As part of the modernisation, cement-soil bodies were created beneath the existing foundations using the jet grouting method (DSV). The DSV bodies serve to adapt and reinforce the foundations in areas where structural alterations within the building are planned. These include, amongst other things, new technical installations, lift shafts and further alterations inside the museum. The work was carried out in stages within the existing building and adapted to the existing structural elements.
Building in confined spaces
The works took place at an inner-city museum site with limited working space. Construction processes, material transport and work areas had to be coordinated with the requirements of the existing building as well as the other refurbishment measures. The foundation works were carried out in such a way that they could be implemented within the existing building structures. This created the conditions necessary for the subsequent construction work in the museum building.
Planning and execution
Several PORR divisions were involved in the project. The construction and installation planning was carried out by PORR Special Civil Engineering Planning GmbH. This planning formed the basis for coordinating the individual construction phases as well as for carrying out the foundations and underpinning works in the historic building.
The foundation for modernisation
Even before visitors can experience the future exhibition areas, the groundwork for the further modernisation of the Neue Pinakothek is being laid beneath the building. Step by step, the DSV works and foundation measures are laying the groundwork for the next construction phases. In this way, the historic building fabric and new technical infrastructure are being integrated within one of Munich’s most significant museum sites.
