A new building complex has been constructed on Hermann-Westphal-Straße in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg for the care home PFLEGEN & WOHNEN WILHELMSBURG. PORR building construction Region Nord carried out the project as the main contractor for HSI Hamburger Senioren Immobilien GmbH. The design was carried out by pde Integrale Planung GmbH, whilst the construction pits and pile foundations were carried out by PORR special civil engineering.

Two new buildings for an existing care facility
Reorganisation of an existing care facility
The new development involved the reorganisation of an existing site. Five older, separate buildings were replaced by two new, interconnected structures. On a gross floor area of around 19,795 m², 312 care rooms were created, including 35 wheelchair-accessible rooms as well as 25 rooms for people in a persistent vegetative state. Care rooms, wards and functional areas, which had previously been spread across several buildings, were consolidated within a single, interconnected building complex.
Building whilst care services continued
A particular challenge was the immediate proximity to a care and dementia centre that remained in operation. Whilst new buildings were being constructed on site, care, support and nursing services continued on the adjacent site.
A logistics concept tailored to the site was developed for the construction site. Access routes, deliveries and site operations were coordinated with the requirements of ongoing operations, and sensitive areas were shielded from the effects of dust and noise.
Multiple service areas on a single construction site
Various companies and specialist divisions within PORR were involved in the project. pde Integrale Planung GmbH was responsible for the design, whilst PORR Spezialtiefbau carried out the construction pits and pile foundation work. In addition, PORR Hochbau Nord handled the detailed design as well as the building construction and building construction works. The project thus progressed from special civil engineering works through the shell construction to the fit-out of the care areas as part of a single integrated construction process.
Care facilities under one roof
The two new buildings have given the site on Hermann-Westphal-Straße a new architectural structure. The project brought together previously separate areas within a single building complex. The site is characterised by water features and green spaces and is situated in an environment that combines residential, care and public infrastructure.
