WILHELMSBURG care facility, Hamburg
Hamburg, Germany / 01.2022 - 05.2024
The WILHELMSBURG care facility replaces five individual buildings on the site at Hermann-Westphal-Straße 9 as part of the ‘Future Care Initiative’. It is operated by HSI Hamburger Senioren Immobilien GmbH. The ‘Haus LINDE’ was built at the same time on the north-west side of the property. PORR Hochbau Region Nord realised the construction project as general contractor.
With a total gross floor area of approx. 19,795 m2 and a gross internal area of approx. 68,453 m3, the two new buildings comprise 312 care rooms, 35 of which are wheelchair accessible and 25 of which are for people in a persistent vegetative state. Construction began in January 2022. The shell of the four-floor building took just under five months to complete, with the last floor concreted on 18 August 2023. In September 2023, the installation of the windows and clinker brick facade began. Completion was at the end of May 2024. The general planning was undertaken by PORR sister pde Integrale Planung. The construction pits and the necessary pile foundations were built by PORR Spezialtiefbau GmbH.
Building on budget: a matter of trust
In addition to the attractive calculation, the decisive factor for the award was the trust in the reliability of PORR. ‘We are very proud of our claim to keep our promises under all circumstances,’ explains Björn Motzkus, technical branch manager of PORR Hochbau Region Nord, adding: ‘The customer knows that they can rely on us in terms of cost-effectiveness, scheduling and quality.’

Surrounded by water and meadows: a care facility in the heart of Hamburg

This is possible thanks to PORR's comprehensive range of construction services from a single source – from general planning to execution planning and from excavation to shell construction. The WILHELMSBURG project involves a number of different construction projects that are interlinked, and the residents' relocations had to be planned well in advance. This made it essential to coordinate the individual trades in a sophisticated way.
New, modernised care facilities in the Hanseatic city
The care facilities in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg offer inpatient, short-term and dementia care and are among the few facilities in Hamburg that care for people in a persistent vegetative state and people with dementia or Korsakow syndrome who are subject to a court-ordered placement. Four care buildings, a boiler house and a former sheltered housing block were scattered around the site at the beginning of the 1960s, resulting in long distances, wasted time and inefficiency in care. Furthermore, they in no way meet today's energy requirements. The new buildings on Hermann-Westphal-Straße combine all wards and functional areas.
