Stadthafenquartier Europacity

To the north of Berlin Central Station, not far from the Spandau Shipping Canal, a new urban district known as Europacity Berlin has been developed. Residential buildings and commercial premises have been constructed in the Stadthafenquartier area. PORR special civil engineering carried out the pile foundation work for the new buildings.

607 atlas piles for residential and commercial buildings in Berlin-Mitte
Residential and commercial buildings in Europacity
The Stadthafenquartier is part of the urban development project along Heidestraße in Berlin-Mitte. The project comprises residential and commercial spaces as well as offices in the immediate vicinity of Berlin Central Station. For this phase of construction, foundation work was required for 302 flats and six commercial units.
607 atlas piles for deep foundations
Between November 2016 and May 2017, the pile foundation works were carried out in three construction phases. A total of 607 atlas piles were used as full-displacement piles. The piles were manufactured with diameters of 46/56 cm and reached lengths of up to 18 m. The design loads were up to 2,670 kN and 905 kN respectively. The pile foundations transfer the load from the buildings into the load-bearing layers of the subsoil.
Design and integrity testing
The design of the piles was supported by isg. In addition, integrity tests were carried out on the piles. The investigations served to inspect and document the completed foundation elements during construction.
Full-displacement piles for the new development
The atlas piles used are full-displacement piles. During construction, the existing soil remains in the subsoil and is displaced. The pile system was tailored to the load requirements of the buildings as well as the site-specific conditions.
Foundation for Europacity Berlin
The installation of the 607 atlas piles laid the groundwork for the construction of the residential and commercial buildings in the Stadthafen quarter. The pile foundation forms the basis for the new development of this section of Europacity Berlin.
