Railway station, Donauwörth

Donauwörth, Germany / 06.2020 - 03.2022

As part of the barrier-free expansion of Donauwörth railway station, a new pedestrian tunnel including new lifts was built beneath the tracks. To this end, a sheet pile box and the necessary temporary railway overpasses were constructed in advance. PORR Spezialtiefbau is prequalified by Deutsche Bahn for all special civil engineering services, including those carried out while rail services are in operation, and is therefore ideally prepared for the special requirements of railway construction sites. The Southern Region was commissioned to construct the impermeable base.

Sealing slab under restricted heights

Back-anchored DSV base

As the groundwater was located in the area of the excavation base, it was necessary to construct a DSV base within the sheet pile box. The challenge here was to construct a DSV base with limited height below the bridges. In the areas of the future lifts, the DSV base was additionally back-anchored with GEWI piles. Due to the limited space available, it was not possible to construct an earth basin or set up appropriate troughs within the construction site.

This difficulty was solved by laying return pipes with a length of up to 200 m. With the aid of compressed air, the DSV return flow was thus transported to an external earth basin. The ‘right’ drilling rig. Another challenge arose from the fact that the drilling rigs had to be lifted into place by freight train in some areas. Thanks to its own wide range of machinery, the team was able to overcome this challenge safely and without any problems by selecting and using the right drilling rig. The adjacent existing building was also underpinned with DSV columns to protect it against settlement.

Good communication led to punctual handover

The cooperation with Kassecker was ‘direct’, which enabled flexible workflows to the satisfaction of both parties. The work was completed within the desired

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
