Slope stabilisation and retaining wall

Rogätz, Germany / 01.2019 - 12.2020

At the confluence of the Elbe and Ohre rivers in Rogätz, a section of slope that had lost its stability as a result of the 2013 Elbe floods was stabilised. Due to the development along the edge of the slope, measures were required to stabilise the slope as well as to renew the flood defences.

Ground nails, micro piles and anchors for slope stabilisation at the confluence of the Elbe and Ohre rivers

Slope stabilisation in the Elbe area

The project involved stabilising the slope using a combination of Soil nailing and safety nets. In addition, a back-anchored retaining wall was erected to provide permanent stabilisation for the slope areas. The work was carried out in the immediate vicinity of existing buildings and had to be adapted to the topographical and geotechnical conditions of the site.

Soil nailing with safety nets

Soil nails up to 8 m in length were installed for the slope stabilisation. In total, around 8,400 running metres of soil nails were installed. The nails were driven into the near-surface soil layers of the slope and supplemented with safety nets. The area covered by the installed safety nets was around 4,500 m².

Work on a slope up to 13 metres high

The slope has height differences of up to 13 metres with a gradient of approximately 45°. A long-reach excavator with a reach of up to 27 metres was used to install the ground anchors and lay the safety nets. The choice of equipment was made taking into account the slope geometry and the accessibility of the work area.

Back-anchored retaining wall on micro piles

In addition to the slope stabilisation, a new retaining wall was constructed. The structure’s foundation was established on around 60 micro piles. To back-anchor the wall, a further 140 anchor piles were installed. In total, almost 3,000 running metres of micro-injection piles were installed as part of the project.

Measures for flood protection and slope stabilisation

The combination of Soil nailing, safety nets, micro piles and anchor piles formed the technical concept for stabilising the slope and the slope edge. The specialist civil engineering works carried out complemented the measures to renew the flood defences in the area of the Elbe-Ohre confluence.

Basis for securing the slope areas

The installation of ground nails, safety nets, micro piles and anchor piles created the conditions necessary for slope stabilisation and the construction of the new retaining wall. The works served to stabilise the slope area in Rogätz and to safeguard the adjacent buildings.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
