Fraport Airport
Frankfurt, Germany / 2020

Rehabilitation of the Centre Line at Frankfurt Airport
Work on runway, approach and taxiway areas
The construction project involved the resurfacing of approximately 80,000 m² of runway surface. In addition to the resurfacing of the top layer, Taxiway L14 was extended by the construction of a new western fillet covering an area of approximately 1,200 m².
Furthermore, existing utility lines, markings, taxiway and traffic signs, as well as the lighting system, were adapted and extended. In addition, work was carried out on the adjacent green spaces to the north and south of the centre runway, covering a total area of around 23,800 m².
Construction schedule during planned closure periods
The works were carried out within a specified timeframe and co-ordinated with other activities on the airport site. Parallel works by various trades were integrated into the construction schedule, ensuring that the individual work stages could be completed within the planned closure periods.
Work in the airside security area
The work was carried out in the airport’s airside security area. To work on the site, staff were required to have completed the air security and basic safety training courses prescribed by Fraport, as well as holding the relevant identification cards and driving authorisations. These framework conditions influenced both the organisation of the construction site and the daily operations during the construction phase.
Collaboration between various specialist departments
In addition to the Münster/Dortmund branch, other business units were involved in the implementation of the project. These included CMG Baulogistik, the company’s own building materials laboratory as well as other specialist departments within PORR. The various services were coordinated and integrated into the construction processes on the airport site.
Infrastructure works at Germany’s largest airport
The works on the Centre Runway comprised roadworks, civil engineering and structural engineering works whilst the airport remained in operation. In addition to the refurbishment of the Airfields, the project focused on the coordination of numerous individual measures as well as the specific requirements of building within the security zone of an international airport.
