On behalf of Hessen Mobil, Road and Traffic Management, Construction Division Wiesbaden – Rhine-Main, PORR transport route engineering carried out extensive refurbishment work on Federal Road 40. The Major Projects branch carried out the work in collaboration with the Osnabrück branch. The focus was on resurfacing as well as renovating the carriageway over approximately two kilometres as well as the slip roads at the Sindlingen junction in the direction of the BAB 66 motorway.

Two kilometres of carriageway resurfaced
The resurfacing works extended, in the eastbound direction, from the Kriftel junction to the Frankfurt-Sindlingen junction. In the westbound direction, the works covered the section from the Sindlingen bridge over the Main to the Kriftel junction. The works were divided into several construction phases and co-ordinated with the traffic management plan.
Rehabilitation whilst traffic continued to flow
A key requirement was to maintain traffic flow throughout the entire construction project. Two lanes were kept open in each direction. This allowed the necessary work to be carried out without completely closing the federal roads to traffic.
Adapted traffic management for the rehabilitation period
The project team set up central reservation crossings to manage traffic flow. In addition, the carriageway was temporarily widened in the vicinity of the junction. This provided the necessary space for traffic management and the construction work taking place in parallel.
Precise procedures in a confined space
The limited space posed particular challenges for site logistics. Construction equipment and work processes had to be precisely coordinated whilst traffic continued to flow. The individual construction phases were coordinated so that two lanes in each direction remained open throughout the rehabilitation.
Laying the foundations for the continued use of the B40
With this rehabilitation, PORR laid the foundations for the continued use of the B40 on the renovated section. The repaired carriageway is once again open to traffic between the Kriftel junction and Frankfurt-Sindlingen.
