Mannheim City Airport connects the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region with domestic and international destinations. Extensive work was carried out on the runway to maintain the existing infrastructure. PORR transport route engineering was commissioned by Rhein-Neckar Flugplatz GmbH to carry out the work. The work took place during a scheduled closure period at the airport and was co-ordinated with flight operations.

Renovation of the runway at Mannheim City Airport
Renovation of the airfields
As part of the project, around 44,000 m² of asphalt was laid in multiple layers and areas of a comparable size were cement-stabilised. In addition, the project involved around 35,000 m³ of earthworks, 2,500 m of sewer construction, 15,000 m of cable protection ducts as well as approximately 5,000 m of road markings. Alongside the actual runway works, drainage systems, pipework infrastructure as well as other components of the airfields were upgraded and renewed.
Airport infrastructure from a single source
The works encompassed various trades and service areas. Earthworks, asphalt works, drainage, utility installation and road marking works were interlinked and had to be coordinated with operations within the airport grounds. At the same time, the technical requirements of the relevant regulations, including the ZTV Beton-StB as well as the FGSV regulations for Airfields, had to be taken into account.
Construction under airport conditions
The work was carried out under the specific conditions of an airport. These included the coordination of safety-related procedures, taking weather-related factors into account, as well as meeting the project-specific requirements for the evenness and construction of the airfields.
The existing asphalt surfacing was removed, recycled and reused as part of the construction project for the subsequent layer. The material was subsequently incorporated into the new sub-base structure.
Digital support for construction processes
The Smart Site One (SSO) digital project management system was used to monitor the asphalt works. The system supports the documentation and tracking of various processes, including mix logistics, temperature recording and paving documentation. During construction, the relevant project data was recorded and documented.
Coordination of numerous project stakeholders
Various specialist departments and project stakeholders were involved in the implementation of the project. The work was carried out on the basis of a coordinated schedule and logistics plan within the planned construction period.
Work in the vicinity of a regional airport
The project at City Airport Mannheim combines traditional road construction works with the specific requirements of airfields. In addition to earthworks, asphalting and utility installation works, the project focused on the coordination of different trades as well as the integration of construction processes into the operations of a regional airport.
