STILL Logistics Centre

Hamburg, Germany / 08.2016 - 11.2016

Two warehouses with a total floor area of around 27,000 m² were built on Billbrookdeich in Hamburg as part of the STILL Logistics Centre project. The project was developed by ECE Projektmanagement GmbH & Co. KG. PORR special civil engineering was commissioned by Max Bögl Stiftung GmbH to carry out the pile foundation work.

Pile foundations for two logistics warehouses

Deep foundations were required for the two new halls. The subsoil consisted of fill to depths of four to six metres, as well as underlying clay layers of approximately three to seven metres in thickness. Only below these were load-bearing sand layers encountered. Owing to these ground conditions, a pile foundation was chosen to transfer the loads from the buildings into the load-bearing soil layers.

Around 2,800 Simplex piles for the deep foundations

PORR special civil engineering manufactured a total of just under 2,800 Simplex piles for the foundations of the halls. The piles ranged in length from 11 m to 22 m and form the basis for load transfer for the two logistics buildings. The pile foundation was tailored to the site’s geotechnical conditions as well as the requirements of the hall structures.

Construction whilst the site remained operational

The foundation works were carried out in parallel with other construction activities on the project site. From October onwards, the pile construction works were coordinated with the structural work. At times, several pieces of machinery were used for the work. The construction sequences were tailored to the requirements of the overall project.

Work in the vicinity of existing infrastructure

To install the piles in the area of the second hall, an existing overhead power line had to be crossed. The work was carried out whilst taking into account the existing infrastructure and the required clearance distances. The machinery was deployed in accordance with local conditions and adapted to the space available on site.

Foundation for the new logistics centre

The installation of around 2,800 Simplex piles laid the groundwork for the construction of the two logistics halls. The foundation forms the basis for the new buildings at the Billbrookdeich site in Hamburg.
