PORR transport route engineering Berlin is carrying out extensive civil engineering works on behalf of 50Hertz for Section A1 of the SuedOstLink power transmission line, one of the key infrastructure projects of Germany’s energy transition. The first 18 kilometres or so of Section A1 will be constructed as an overhead line. For the 29.6 kilometres of the line route to the south, PORR has been commissioned under mixed lot A1.1 to construct the underground cable route.

Major pipeline construction project for the energy transition
The scope of work includes the laying of cable protection pipes using open-cut trenching, the construction of crossing structures, the creation of access roads and work areas, as well as extensive earthworks and topsoil works. Separate cable trenches are required due to the laying of two 525-kilovolt direct-current connections. Closed construction methods for crossing roads and waterways are carried out by specialist subcontractors.
Phased line construction based on Lean construction principles
Implementation follows the lean construction method using a phased construction approach. Several synchronised work teams are operating along the route to ensure efficient and predictable processes. A particular challenge is the coordination of numerous interfaces – from landowners and suppliers to specialist contractors for cable pulling, horizontal drilling and pipe jacking.
Due to the operational heat generation of the power cables, which will later reach up to 60°C in the ground, the specific requirements regarding thermal and soil-mechanical properties must be observed when installing the soil materials in the pipeline zone.
CMG, a subsidiary company of PORR, developed an innovative method to optimise pipeline construction using a patented plough design. Using GPS-controlled attachments for a crawler loader, the cable protection pipes and fibre-optic pipes are laid swiftly into conduit zone C.
With the completion of section A1, PORR transport route engineering Berlin is making a significant contribution to the completion of the SuedOstLink.
