K57

Wettringen, Germany / 04.2025 - 09.2025

On behalf of Steinfurt District, the Münster branch of PORR transport route engineering undertook the dismantling and redesign of the K57 district road in Wettringen-Bilk. The focus was on adapting the existing standard cross-section (RQ 14) to the requirements of the new traffic layout. A key component of the project was the reorganisation of the cycling infrastructure.

New routes for everyone on the K57

New road cross-section over 2.9 kilometres

The works covered a total length of around 2,900 m. The original road cross-section consisted of a 7 m wide carriageway and 1.50 m wide hard shoulders on either side. As part of the redesign, the existing carriageway structure was dismantled in certain sections and the road cross-section was reorganised.

Dedicated route for cyclists

A completely new, separate cycle path was constructed along the K57. A new dividing strip separates it from the carriageway. This provided cyclists with a dedicated route along the redesigned section of the road.

Carriageway re-profiled and resurfaced

The remaining road structure was re-profiled using an asphalt levelling layer. This was followed by rehabilitation using a thick-lay asphalt binder course and asphalt surface course. The existing carriageway was thus integrated into the newly designed road cross-section.

Bridges adapted to the new cross-section

Two bridge structures were also part of the construction project. They were stripped back to the bare concrete, rehabilitated and adapted to the new cross-section of the K57. In addition, two cattle crossings were refurbished as part of the works.

PORR business units working together

In addition to PORR Transport Route Engineering, other PORR business units were involved in the project. The team from PORR Mastic Asphalt was responsible for waterproofing the two bridges. PORR Transport and Milling Technology was also involved in the project.

Reorganised routes in Wettringen-Bilk

With this redesign, PORR laid the foundations for a clear separation of the carriageway and cycle traffic on the upgraded section of the K57. The separate cycle path allows cyclists to follow their own route alongside the district road.
