In the Rödelheim district of Frankfurt, a new residential development called VIDO is being built to the west of the city centre. The project comprises twelve residential buildings with a total of 166 flats and a living area of around 13,300 m². The buildings are complemented by underground car parks, and almost all the flats feature terraces, balconies or loggias. PORR Spezialtiefbau Region West was awarded the contract to carry out all the special civil engineering works for the construction pits. The detailed design was prepared by PORR Spezialtiefbau Planung GmbH.

Construction of bored pile walls and sheet pile walls
Living between the city and green spaces
The VIDO quarter is situated in the west of Frankfurt and combines proximity to the city centre with the surrounding green spaces of the Taunus foothills. For the new residential development, two separate construction pits were created, which were constructed in stages. Even before the residential buildings come into view, the construction pits and foundation elements for the future structures are taking shape beneath the surface.
Bored pile walls and sheet pile walls for construction pit stabilisation
The construction pits were constructed in two phases. The construction site for the first phase measured approximately 110 × 45 m, whilst the second phase measured approximately 53 × 68 m. A total of around 6,300 m² of watertight steel sheet pile walls were used to secure the construction pits. The sheet pile walls were anchored to the ground using tie beams and temporary wire anchors. Different sheet pile wall profiles were used for the construction pit support, tailored to the specific requirements of each construction phase.
Bored pile walls to protect neighbouring buildings
In the area of the neighbouring buildings, the construction pits were enclosed by overlapping bored pile walls. Steel struts and abutment piles were used for bracing. The structure secured the construction pits along the neighbouring plots and formed the basis for the subsequent earthworks and structural work. The individual shoring systems were combined within the two construction phases and adapted to the local conditions.
Special civil engineering for two construction phases
The works were carried out in two independent construction phases. Excavation shoring, back anchors and shoring measures were installed in stages and tailored to the respective construction stages. In addition to the bored pile walls, the scope of work included the installation of sheet pile walls, back anchors as well as the associated safety measures for the construction pits. Step by step, this laid the foundations for the subsequent building works within the quarter.
Foundations for the VIDO residential quarter
Even before the residential buildings, underground car parks and outdoor facilities were constructed, the groundwork for the subsequent construction phases had been laid. The installation of sheet pile walls, bored pile walls and back anchors laid the foundation for the new residential development in Frankfurt-Rödelheim. Between the city, green spaces and the residential quarter, another building block of urban development in the west of Frankfurt is thus taking shape.
