Adjacent to Westfalen AG’s port tank farm in Münster-Gelmer, a new plant was built on a site of around 10 hectares, comprising a workshop building, a refrigerant storage facility, as well as pumping and filling installations. PORR’s transport route engineering division, Münster/Dortmund branch, and the building construction division, Münster branch, carried out the contracts for the earthworks, drainage, pipework and road construction, as well as the construction of operational and production buildings, working in tandem.

Building and civil engineering works for a new production site
New site on the Dortmund-Ems Canal
With this new building, Westfalen AG relocated from its previous site in Münster-Gremmendorf to the “Hessenweg” industrial estate on the Dortmund-Ems Canal. The project involved the construction of a refrigerant storage facility with associated filling plants, as well as workshop, operational and staff buildings.
Traffic areas and utility pipe works on the factory site
As part of the developments, roadways and operational areas were constructed. Concrete road surfaces were laid over an area of approximately 4,500 m², particularly in areas where industrial trucks and specialised vehicles manoeuvre and turn.
Further areas of the site, covering a total of around 50,000 m², were asphalted. Beneath the paved areas, approximately 20,000 m³ of frost-protection sand as well as around 15,000 m³ of crushed stone base course material were installed. The profiling was carried out using 3D machine control.
Slide gate structure for the drainage infrastructure
A notable achievement in the pipework construction was the fabrication of a slide gate structure weighing approximately 22 t. This forms part of the site’s drainage infrastructure and is used to control the flow of liquids within the system.
Construction of operational and production buildings
The building construction team carried out the site backfilling using around 65,000 m³ of soil, as well as the turnkey construction of an operational and staff building. In addition, six production and industrial halls were constructed using a steel framework with trapezoidal roof sheets and insulated metal cladding.
Liquid-tight floors were installed in certain areas. As a specialist contractor under the Water Resources Act (WHG), PORR carried out the necessary work in collaboration with an expert. The relevant documentation was provided in accordance with the project-specific requirements.
Coordination of multiple construction phases
To carry out the building, civil engineering and site development works, the site was divided into three construction phases. This enabled the various works to be carried out in parallel and the interfaces between building construction and transport route engineering to be coordinated.
