Extension of the U5 Europaviertel

A new quarter, the Europaviertel, has been developed on the site of Frankfurt’s former main freight station. To connect the quarter to the city’s underground network, the U5 line is being extended westwards from its current terminus. The new light rail route covers a total of around 2,750 m and runs both underground and at ground level along Europa-Allee. In 2017, the U5 Europaviertel consortium – comprising PORR’s structural engineering, tunnelling and special civil engineering divisions – was awarded the contract to construct an approximately 1,160-metre-long underground section. The project includes the connection to the existing U5 line, an emergency exit at the junction, the shell for the Güterplatz station, as well as a ramp structure through which the route is brought to the surface.
