Successful complete refurbishment of the runway at City Airport Mannheim

Mannheim, / Transport route engineering / Press Release

PORR Transport Infrastructure Major Projects, in cooperation with the Münster branch of PORR Transport Infrastructure, completed the comprehensive renovation of the runway at City Airport Mannheim on schedule. The client was Rhein Neckar Flugplatz GmbH, which set the highest standards in terms of quality, adherence to schedule and minimal disruption to operations. The construction period lasted only two weeks, from 16 to 29 October 2025.

The image shows a large-scale road construction site where a new carriageway is being built. Several yellow asphalt pavers are working side by side, applying fresh asphalt to the wide surface. In front of and behind them, rollers are in use to compact the surface. Numerous lorries deliver the hot mix directly to the machines, while construction workers in high-visibility vests supervise and coordinate the work. Light smoke rises above the pavers, indicating the use of hot material. The construction site is located in open countryside with green fields and agricultural land in the background. Industrial facilities and a few buildings can be seen on the horizon.

The runway at City Airport Mannheim was completely renovated in just two weeks.

As part of the project, around 44,000 square metres of asphalt were laid in multiple layers and areas of the same size were cement-stabilised. In addition, 35,000 m³ of earthworks, 2,500 m of sewer construction, 15,000 m of cable protection pipes and 5,000 m of markings were carried out. The work was carried out within extremely tight time frames, as flight operations were to be affected as little as possible. This required precise timing of all trades, reliable logistics and maximum material availability. In addition, strict technical regulations such as ZTV Beton-StB and the FGSV information sheets for flight operation areas had to be complied with.

The coordination of safety-related processes in the sensitive airport area, weather conditions and the guarantee of absolute quality and evenness placed special demands on the PORR Verkehrswegebau team. An environmentally friendly approach was achieved by reusing existing material: the existing asphalt pavement was broken up on site, reinforced with cement and used as a new substructure – this reduced transport distances and almost all disposal quantities.

Another factor contributing to the success of the project was the use of the digital project management tool Smart Site One (SSO). This tool enables precise control of all asphalt processes in real time – from mix logistics and temperature control to complete documentation. Real-time data on delivery quantities, temperatures and rolling passes enabled processes to be optimally coordinated, downtimes to be reduced and the quality of the paving to be reliably ensured.

With a high level of expertise in runway rehabilitation, a well-thought-out scheduling and logistics concept, and transparent, cooperative collaboration, the PORR Transport Infrastructure team set new standards in quality and process reliability.
