PORR secures a contract for bridge foundations as part of Germany’s largest new motorway project
Schernikau , / Special civil engineering
As part of the project to close the gap in the A14 motorway between Magdeburg and Schwerin, PORR is delivering a key component of the future transport infrastructure: PORR special civil engineering GmbH is responsible for carrying out the pile foundation work for a bridge near Schernikau.
In future, the road bridge will span a local watercourse near Schernikau.
On behalf of Matthäi Bauunternehmen GmbH & Co. KG, Magdeburg branch, the PORR Berlin branch is installing a total of 118 Frankipiles NG® piles, each with a diameter of 61 centimetres and lengths of up to 12 metres. This will lay the foundations for the planned bridge structure. The road bridge will carry traffic over a local watercourse near Schernikau. Designed as an open culvert with a clear width of 11 metres and a height of 3 metres, it is engineered to allow unimpeded water flow whilst also facilitating traffic.
The foundation work is being carried out under challenging ground conditions. Varied soil layers, narrow pile spacing as well as, in some cases, unknown subsoil conditions place high demands on planning and implementation. Frankipiles NG® are being used for the foundations: as slender driven piles, they are designed to bear the intended loads and can be adapted to the existing ground conditions. The fully displacement construction method allows the pile diameters and lengths to be optimised. This also helps to reduce transport and disposal costs.
Special protection requirements apply on site with regard to the adjacent body of water, particularly to prevent the discharge of pollutants. Compliance with all measures is monitored by an environmental construction supervision team.
