A100, Los 11a

Berlin, Germany / 10.2009 - 12.2024

The Berlin branch was awarded Lot 11a of the 16th construction phase of the A100 in Berlin by Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes. The contract involved the civil engineering works to complete the previously constructed engineering structures from Lots 1 to 7. In the first section, a trough structure approximately 1.7 km long was constructed for a six-lane motorway with a hard shoulder. In the second section, the roadworks were carried out in the ‘Grenzallee’ tunnel.

Road construction for the Berlin Ring Road

Extension of a key section of Berlin’s transport network

The A100 motorway forms a central part of Berlin’s transport network. The 16th construction phase involves the creation of a section approximately 3.2 km long between the Neukölln motorway junction and the Am Treptower Park junction. The new section connects the Berlin Ring Road with the A113 and complements existing links for long-distance, regional and urban transport.

As part of Lot 11a, the civil engineering structures that had already been erected were upgraded to meet road construction standards. This included the installation of a drainage system, the laying of base courses comprising concrete and unbound aggregate, as well as asphalt works in the area of the trough structure and the tunnel.

Road construction between the trough structure and the tunnel

The works took place within the challenging environment of an inner-city project. The restricted access to the construction site, as well as the central reservation reinforcement made of in-situ concrete - up to two metres high - influenced the planning of the construction sequence and logistics.

The various work stages had to be adapted to the local conditions and the existing structures. This resulted in numerous interfaces between the individual construction phases and trades.

Part of a large-scale infrastructure project

The first asphalt works in Lot 11a began in early 2022. In April 2023, the first asphalt was laid in the ‘Grenzallee’ tunnel. Prior to this, in March 2023, temporary footpaths had been constructed using reinforced concrete with aerated concrete.

The works included connecting the new section to both the Neukölln motorway junction and the Am Treptower Park junction. Further adjacent construction sections along the A100 were carried out by other PORR units as part of Lots 5 and 6.
