Frankfurt (Oder)
A12

A12, zwischen Berlin und Frankfurt/Oder, Germany / 04.2020 - 11.2022

On the A12 motorway between the Frankfurt (Oder)-Mitte junction and the Oder bridge, the carriageways in both directions were completely resurfaced. The work was carried out due to damage to the existing concrete surfaces caused by an alkali-silica reaction (ASR), colloquially known as ‘concrete cancer’. The PORR branches in Berlin and Eisenhüttenstadt were commissioned to carry out the work. The works involved the dismantling of the existing carriageways, ground improvement works as well as the construction of new carriageways using asphalt and concrete.

Road resurfacing due to an alkali-silica reaction

Construction work began on the Berlin-bound carriageway with the dismantling of the existing road surface. Over a length of around 2.8 km, the existing road surface was dismantled across the full width of the carriageway down to the sub-base. In total, around 33,000 m² of road pavement was removed and prepared for the subsequent construction work. In sections, ground improvement and stabilisation works were carried out to provide a foundation for the new road structure.

Asphalt and concrete construction on two carriageways

Once the preparatory work was complete, the carriageway in the direction of Berlin was rebuilt using asphalt. The superstructure had a total thickness of 32 cm and was laid on a gravel base course. On the carriageway heading towards Poland, the resurfacing was carried out using concrete. Following dismantling of the existing surface down to the existing unbound base course, a new 30.5 cm thick exposed aggregate concrete surface was laid. In addition to the carriageways, sewer works as well as the necessary sub-base drainage were also carried out.

Work between the carriageway and infrastructure

The construction work took place within an existing motorway alignment and had to be coordinated with the constraints of road traffic operations. Dismantling, ground improvement, drainage works as well as the construction of the new carriageways were carried out in several consecutive construction phases. The individual tasks were coordinated between the teams involved and implemented in stages.

The foundation for the upgraded A12

Even before vehicles were able to use the route in its entirety again, new carriageways, drainage systems and base courses were constructed along this section of the route. The dismantling of the damaged concrete surfaces and the construction of new traffic areas laid the foundation for the continued operation of the A12 between Frankfurt (Oder) and the Oder Bridge. Along a stretch of approximately 2.8 km, a further section of the transport infrastructure in eastern Brandenburg was thus completed.
