Closing the gap on the A14
Schernikau, Germany / 05.2026 - 06.2026
As part of the project to close the gap in the A14 motorway between Magdeburg and Schwerin, PORR Spezialtiefbau GmbH is undertaking the pile foundation work for a bridge structure near Schernikau. On behalf of Matthäi Bauunternehmen GmbH & Co. KG, Magdeburg branch, the PORR Berlin branch is carrying out the necessary special civil engineering works. A total of 118 Frankipiles NG® form the foundation for the planned bridge structure.

PORR secures contract for bridge foundations as part of the A14 motorway link-up
Bridge over a local watercourse
The road bridge near Schernikau will in future span a local watercourse. The structure will be built as an open culvert with a clear width of 11 metres and a height of 3 metres. The design is intended to allow unimpeded water flow whilst also serving a traffic management function.
118 Frankipfähle piles for the foundations
For the foundations, PORR is installing a total of 118 Frankipiles NG® with a diameter of 61 centimetres. The individual piles are up to 12 metres long. As slender driven piles, they are designed to bear the intended loads and can be adapted to the existing ground conditions.
The subsoil poses particular challenges
Varied soil layers, narrow pile spacing and, in some cases, unknown subsoil conditions pose particular challenges for the construction work. The use of Frankipiles NG® allows the foundations to be tailored to these conditions. Their fully displacement-based construction method enables the optimisation of pile diameters and lengths.
Displacement construction reduces effort
During the installation of Frankipiles NG® piles, the surrounding soil is displaced. This reduces not only the dimensions of the piles but also the transport and disposal costs associated with excavated soil. The method thus combines the technical requirements of the foundation with an execution tailored to the site conditions.
Work in the immediate vicinity of watercourses
The adjacent watercourse requires special protective measures during construction work. In particular, regulations aimed at preventing the discharge of pollutants apply. Compliance with the specified measures is monitored by an environmental construction supervision team.
Integration of transport and watercourses
The bridge structure forms part of the A14 motorway link between Magdeburg and Schwerin. At Schernikau, it will in future enable traffic to cross the local watercourse whilst ensuring the unimpeded flow of water.
