Refurbishment of the A293 motorway bridge

Oldenburg, Germany / 02.2017 - 12.2018

As part of the refurbishment of the OL2 motorway bridge on the A293 in Oldenburg, the existing bridge over Alexanderstraße was replaced with a new structure. The bridge, which is approximately 69 metres long, dates from 1970. For the foundation works, PORR special civil engineering was commissioned by the Fritz Spieker and Matthäi joint venture to construct the pile foundations.

Atlas piles for the replacement construction of a bridge structure

Reconstruction of the OL2 motorway bridge

The OL2 bridge forms part of the A293, the Oldenburg western bypass. Following a structural re-assessment in accordance with the federal re-assessment guidelines, it was determined that the structure required replacement. Before the actual foundation work began, test piles were installed and load tests carried out. Once the results had been evaluated, work commenced on the final pile foundations.

Atlas piles for the bridge foundations

A total of 102 Atlas piles were manufactured for the new bridge structure. The bored screw piles have diameters of 46/56 cm, were designed for design loads of up to 1,400 kN and reached lengths of up to 20 m. The atlas piles transfer the traffic loads and dead loads of the bridge structure into the load-bearing soil layers.

Load tests to verify bearing capacity

Before series production began, two static pile load tests were carried out. The load tests served to verify the bearing capacity of the selected pile system and formed the basis for the construction of the final foundations.

Construction in two phases

Construction work began in February 2017 with the installation of the test piles. Following the initial partial demolition of the existing bridge and the evaluation of the load tests, the pile foundation for the first construction phase was installed. The replacement bridge was constructed in sections to prepare for further bridges and road construction work.

Foundation for the new A293 bridge

The installation of the atlas piles created the conditions necessary for the construction of the new OL2 bridge. The pile foundation forms the basis for load transfer in the new bridge structure and is part of the infrastructure works on the A293 in Oldenburg.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
