Between the Pforzheim-Nord and Pforzheim-Süd junctions, the A8 is being extended over a distance of around 4.8 km. As part of the overall project, various structures and facilities are being built along the route in addition to the transport infrastructure. These include the ‘Hagenschieß’ green bridge near Niefern. PORR structural engineering, Munich office, has been commissioned to construct the new 64-metre-long green bridge.

The Hagenschieß green bridge as part of the A8 motorway expansion project
Structure in the Central/Northern Black Forest Nature Park
The city of Pforzheim and the Upper Enz Valley are situated within the Central/Northern Black Forest Nature Park. The green bridge is being constructed as part of the six-lane widening of the A8 motorway and complements the planned measures along the route.
In road construction and structural engineering, green bridges are designed as crossing structures. They create connections between areas separated from one another by transport routes.
Integral arch bridge over the A8
The ‘Hagenschieß’ green bridge was constructed as an integral arch bridge and underwent foundation work on pier foundations. In addition, noise barriers were erected along the structure. The structure spans the motorway and was constructed in coordination with the construction phases of the A8 widening project.
Construction carried out in several sections
As the work took place in parallel with the A8 expansion, the construction process was aligned with the traffic phases of the main ‘Enztalquerung’ project. The solid arch was therefore constructed in sections and supported at the centre during the construction phase. Following the completion of the first half-arch, there was a prolonged halt to construction before work resumed.
Structure between the transport routes and the natural environment
The Hagenschieß green bridge provides a crossing over the A8 in the area of the Black Forest Central/North Nature Park. The structure forms part of the redesign of the motorway section between Pforzheim-Nord and Pforzheim-Süd and is being built in parallel with the roadworks and civil engineering works along the route. The green bridge provides the structural basis for connecting the areas on either side of the motorway and complements the other measures being carried out as part of the upgrade project.
