Barracks development

Krampnitz, Germany / 04.2021 - 06.2023

A new district is being built on the 140-hectare former barracks site in Krampnitz, north of Potsdam. Between Krampnitzsee, Fahrländer See, and Döberitzer Heide, housing for 10,000 people will be created over the next few years. A road network with a total length of more than 10 km is to be built in Krampnitz. The Berlin branch was commissioned by Entwicklungsträger Potsdam GmbH to dismantle the old road surface, carry out accompanying civil engineering work for archaeological excavations, and develop five planned roads.

Civil engineering works within the framework of archaeological excavations

Since March 2021, the former military site in Potsdam has been undergoing extensive dismantling. The traffic route construction team took on the dismantling of the old road surfaces, existing pipes, drainage structures, and heating ducts, as well as the subsequent backfilling. In addition, construction roads were built for further construction lots. The planned roads were dismantled, archaeologically examined, and then provided with new construction roads. This marks the successful completion of the project.

Careful work on military grounds

Earthworks on military grounds always require special care: unexploded ordnance, especially from World War II, still poses a problem and a danger. When searching for unexploded ordnance, our colleagues carried out the excavation work with extreme caution and attention. The construction machines used are equipped with additional protective devices. The excavated material was removed in layers to detect any signs of unexploded ordnance. These steps were carried out under the technical supervision of an explosives expert.

Careful work was not only necessary in the context of unexploded ordnance detection, but also in areas of archaeological excavations carried out on the large construction site.

Developing land and making it suitable for construction

After the team had already provided earthworks support for the demolition of the old road pavements and the archaeological excavations in contract unit 01 of the first construction phase in 2021, PORR was also awarded the contract for contract units 02, 04, and 10 for the development of several streets in a joint venture. These contracts included road construction, the installation of road drainage and sidewalks, and the landscaping of the planned roads.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
