Aachen
Aachen motorway junction
Aachen, Germany / 06.2012 - 11.2018
The Aachen motorway junction connects the main transport routes towards Belgium, the Netherlands and Cologne. As a five-arm motorway junction, it is one of the few of its kind in Germany and forms a key hub for cross-border road traffic. Since 2009, the motorway junction as well as the adjacent motorway network have been undergoing reconstruction and expansion in stages. PORR transport route engineering was involved in the works across several construction phases.

Redevelopment of a complex transport interchange
PORR’s involvement in the expansion of the Aachen motorway junction began in 2009 with the first construction phase. In the years that followed, further contracts were awarded for the 3rd, 4th and 7th construction phases.
As part of the works, existing traffic routes were adapted, slip roads were re-routed, new traffic links were established as well as additional lanes were added. Furthermore, new entry and exit ramps were constructed in accordance with the specifications of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Road Construction Authority (Landesbetrieb Straßenbau NRW).
Work on the A44 and A4
The first and third construction phases involved the expansion of the A44 from the direction of Belgium. The seventh construction phase involved work on the A4 in the direction of the Netherlands. The fourth construction phase comprised the modification of the A4 from the direction of Cologne, as well as the construction of slip roads to the A44 running above it in the direction of Belgium and Düsseldorf.
Road construction whilst traffic continues to flow
The individual construction phases were integrated into the existing traffic management system. In doing so, the works had to be coordinated with the demands of a heavily congested motorway junction. The multitude of traffic routes, intersections and junctions influenced the construction processes and the phased implementation of the measures.
Further development of transport infrastructure in the border region
The works at the Aachen motorway junction combine road construction activities across several construction phases within a long-term infrastructure project. In addition to the widening of the carriageways, the project focused in particular on adapting existing traffic routing as well as integrating new traffic links between the A4 and A44.
