K270
Holdorf, Germany / 09.2025 - 10.2025
On behalf of Vechta District, the Osnabrück branch of PORR transport route engineering has resurfaced a stretch of approximately 2.1 kilometres of Ihorster Straße (K270) between the Holdorf district of Ihorst and the roundabout in Mühlen. In addition to the new road surface, the residents’ access roads as well as the drainage channel were adapted to the new road level, and the verges were repaired. Particular challenges arose due to varying existing sub-base structures as well as excavated material contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Road resurfacing on the K270 near Holdorf
The village of Ihorster is a typical scattered settlement in the Oldenburg Münsterland region, characterised by rows of trees, fields and farmsteads. For local residents, the K270 is a vital transport link in this rural area. To minimise the disruption caused by the full road closure and avoid delaying subsequent works, it was particularly important that the project be completed on schedule.
New road surface laid over approximately 12,000 square metres
After the existing road surface had been milled off, a structure approximately twelve centimetres thick, comprising an asphalt base course and surface course, was laid using the high-laying method over an area of around 12,000 square metres. At the same time, the residents’ access roads as well as the five-row drainage channel were adjusted to the new road level. Finally, the verges along the route were repaired.
Variations in existing sub-base structures required adjustments
During the works, it became apparent that the existing sub-base varied in composition from section to section. Among other things, old asphalt base courses, compacted layers as well as gravel base courses from previous road-widening works were uncovered. As this non-homogeneous sub-base could not have been foreseen in advance, the construction schedule had to be adjusted at short notice.
PAH-contaminated material disposed of in accordance with regulations
In addition, excavated material contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) required disposal in accordance with the accompanying document procedure. In the affected areas, damaged sections were excavated and the surfaces subsequently levelled and recompacted. Where necessary, a new gravel base course was also laid, ensuring that the planned completion date could be met despite the additional work.
Important link in a rural area
With the K270 now renovated, residents between Ihorst and Mühlen once again have a restored transport link at their disposal. For the predominantly rural community of Ihorst, the district road thus continues to contribute to accessibility in everyday life.
