Road resurfacing on the L 334 near Letschin
Explosive ordnance survey prior to road construction
Before the actual road construction work began, the section of road was surveyed for explosive ordnance. This was due to the location in the Oderbruch region, which is identified as a high-risk area on Brandenburg’s explosive ordnance contamination map. Once clearance had been granted, work could begin on the 7.1 km section between the junction of the B 167 and the L 334 and the entrance to the village of Letschin. A 5.2 km section between the bridge over the Alte Oder and the railway line before Letschin was resurfaced using the high-build method.
New road structure for the 5.2-kilometre section
Following the dismantling, PORR prepared the road structure for the new asphalt layers. A gravel base course was additionally laid on top of a base course that had been improved in situ. This was followed by the new asphalt binder course and asphalt surface course.
Reused cobblestones
When constructing the improved base course, PORR utilised existing road construction material directly from the project. First, the existing unbound base course was homogenised. Subsequently, the cobblestone surface – which had been removed and crushed over an area of around 31,000 m² – was integrated into the homogenised sub-base.
Existing materials remain in the road structure
Thanks to this processing, the removed small-format paving stones could be reused in the new road structure. Together with the existing unbound base course, they form the improved base course of the rehabilitated section. As a result, a significant proportion of the existing road construction material remained within the project.
Foundation for the continued use of the L 334
With this rehabilitation, PORR laid the foundations for the continued use of the L 334 on the renewed section near Letschin. The national road, situated between the junction with the B 167 and the entrance to Letschin, is now available with a renewed road structure and new layers of asphalt.
